Mayor Kevin S. Smith and city administration were deeply saddened today to hear about the death of a juvenile while under police apprehension.
“Our heart goes out to the family of the child that passed away while in police custody. It is a tragic situation when a death occurs with a person at such a young age. We have asked Indiana State Police to conduct a full investigation into all circumstances surrounding this unfortunate passing. We will inform the public of what occurred once this takes place. We are very sorry for the loss,” Mayor Kevin S. Smith said.
Anderson Police were called to investigate a 12:17 a.m. burglary alarm call at the Madison County Shrine Club, 2914 White Street Anderson, Indiana. Consequently, Anderson police took into custody two juvenile males and one adult male in connection to that burglary.
During the initial detainment of the three, one of the juvenile offenders was handcuffed behind his back and placed inside the rear seat of the patrol car while the investigation unfolded.
One detainee, a seventeen-year-old male, whose name is being withheld, was able to free himself without detection from his restraints and create a ligature with one of the car’s seatbelts.
Once the teen was discovered, police immediately performed CPR and called for an ambulance. The teen was transported to a local Anderson Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
