Two-Year-Olds, Meals, and Patience

For a long time, Son was small enough that he didn’t need a very big dinner and would finish long before me and Husband. But now he’s 2½ and eats as much as a size 6 high school girl. Which inevitably leads to much longer meals.

Sure, Husband and I like to sit and talk. But we’re busy and often need to go do other things. And we can’t predict how much Son needs to eat any more. We have a general idea, but with growth spurts it’s hard to pin it down. He’ll eat pretty good for the first part of his meal, and then he slows down dramatically (but only sometimes). Is he distracted or is he full? I wish I knew. Often times, I’ll just give up and take away his food. He protests for a few minutes, but then all is well with the world, and Husband and I can get on with life.

Update

And then there are nights like tonight. We had soup, which is complicated for a two-year-old. And yet he gobbled his entire meal up quickly and efficiently.
