Pregnancy Number Two

At this point I’m 22 weeks pregnant. It’s baby number two and quite different from baby number one.

This week’s glossary:
DINK, Double-Income, No Children; SPB, Stupid Pregnant Brain*; GD, Gestational Diabetes

With Son I was a DINK, helped out with the kids’ ministry at church, and all our friends were childless. There was plenty of time to play. Today I’m at home taking care of a 2½-year-old. I also run a graphic design business from home with Husband, sell Tupperware on the side, and am the current president of the MOMS Club of Pendleton, IN. Between Son, our work, and most of our friends now having a child, there’s not nearly as much time to play. You know you’re a parent when you have to schedule a date instead of just heading out because you feel like it.

The hardest part about being pregnant this time around is that I don’t have a set schedule. When working an office job (even one with variety) you pretty much know what every day is going to be like. It’s a lot harder to forget what you’re supposed to do. Sure, these days we have things we do on a regular basis (church, business group, music class, etc.); but my day-to-day life changes dramatically. One day I may be home all day. Another day I may get up early for my business group, spend a few hours at a play date, then during nap time have a conference call with a client. Between the varied schedule and SPB I don’t know where I’d be without my Google Calendar. And I maintain digital checklists through Remember The Milk so I know what my tasks are for the week. I also have GD for the second time around. Last time it didn’t show up until the 3rd trimester. This time it showed up at the beginning. It’s not that it’s particularly hard to limit my carbohydrate intake, but it is a pain. And, who wants to be cutting down on yummy goodies (or even mashed potatoes) at Thanksgiving and Christmas? Especially a pregnant woman that’s supposed to be eating a bunch of extra calories.

On the plus side, being pregnant takes a lot less work this time around. I don’t spend every spare moment researching development, diaper options, food options, etc. Heck, half the time I can’t remember exactly how far along I am. It’s also easier this time because I can sleep in whenever I want and if I’m tired I can just do nothing.

Of course, you’d think there’d be less stress about a second kid, but I’m just as nervous about this one as the last one. Son is a pretty good kid and I’m definitely worried Daughter won’t be so easy. But I’m still excited. In fact, after Son was so sweet with a baby last weekend, I’m anxious for Daughter to get here so I can see him be a great big brother.

*For those of you that doubt the existence of SPB, rest assured it does exist. Sure, we may be intelligent women that are always on top of everything, but put a baby inside of us and it all goes out the window. We can’t remember daily tasks. We forget entire conversations. It even affects grammar and spacial reasoning.
